Some jobs are just jobs. This one was different. We had the chance to complete a full roof cleaning at Fremont Middle School in Roseburg - moss removal, soft washing, and full cleanup across 25,000 square feet of asphalt shingles. Six days of hard work. Every bit of it worth it.
Here's what we were dealing with going in - moss had taken hold across the seams and edges of the shingles, the kind of buildup that doesn't just look bad but actually works against the roof over time. Moss holds moisture against the surface, and on a roof this size, that's a lot of slow, ongoing damage if it goes untreated. Getting ahead of it matters.
We ran a soft wash application across the full surface. Soft washing is the right call on asphalt shingles - it cleans deep without beating up the granules the way pressure washing can. The treatment doesn't just clear what's visible. It gets into the root structure of the moss and keeps it from bouncing back quickly. On a commercial property covering this much ground, doing it right the first time is the only real option.
What we ended up with was a clean, even roof surface from edge to edge - shingles looking like they have a lot of life left in them. The difference between before and after is hard to miss. And for a building like this one, that kind of maintained roof is real value held onto rather than a costly replacement pushed forward sooner than it needed to be.
There's also a personal side to this one. The owner of Taylor Pro Exteriors went to Fremont Middle School. Walking those halls as a kid, never imagining he'd come back years later as a business owner trusted to take care of the place - that's not something you take lightly. It's a reminder of why we take every job seriously, whether it's a small residential roof or a 25,000 square foot school. We're just getting started.
